Mazagon Dock Unveils Rs 27,000-Crore Raigad Shipbuilding Cluster
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Ltd to establish a large greenfield shipbuilding cluster at Dighi Port in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. This project, estimated to involve an investment of around ₹27,000 crore, is set to create approximately 90,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
Creating a Maritime Industrial Ecosystem
The agreement, signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior state officials, marks a significant step towards developing a state-of-the-art shipbuilding facility in the region. The project, a joint initiative of the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the Mumbai Port Authority through NSHIPML, aims to achieve an annual shipbuilding capacity of at least two million gross tonnes.
Expanding India’s Shipbuilding Capabilities
With a focus on both defence and commercial shipbuilding, the Dighi facility is poised to become a key player in India’s maritime industry. The strategic location of the cluster at Dighi, providing access to the Arabian Sea and Maharashtra’s established maritime network, is expected to attract private investment, advanced technologies, and suppliers involved in marine equipment, steel, propulsion systems, electronics, and heavy engineering.
Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the potential of this project to generate direct and indirect jobs across various sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, engineering, fabrication, maintenance, and ancillary industries. The project is in line with the Centre’s Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster Development Plan and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to boost India’s share of global shipbuilding and reduce dependence on overseas yards.
Construction of the shipbuilding cluster is contingent upon securing the necessary permissions and regulatory clearances. The Maharashtra government anticipates a timeline of approximately three years for completion, subject to factors such as land development, environmental approvals, port connectivity, financing, and infrastructure development.
Overall, the establishment of this greenfield shipbuilding cluster signifies a strategic move towards bolstering Maharashtra’s position in India’s shipbuilding industry, fostering job creation, and enhancing the country’s capacity for domestic vessel construction, repair, and recycling.
