McCormick backs S. Korea’s greater role in U.S. shipbuilding, urges faster

U.S. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) expressed optimism about South Korea’s potential to enhance shipbuilding capacity for the United States, urging faster progress on Seoul’s planned investment in the U.S. The senator emphasized the importance of closer shipbuilding collaboration, highlighting its benefits in rebuilding the U.S. industrial base and providing Korean companies with increased access to the American market. McCormick also underscored the significance of reducing dependence on supply chains from China through enhanced cooperation.

Investment Initiatives Driving Industry Renaissance

McCormick commended Hanwha’s investment in Philly Shipyard and Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel as catalysts for a potential “renaissance” in the industry, particularly within Pennsylvania. He pointed out that Hanwha Ocean’s expansion in the U.S. aligns with South Korea’s broader efforts to revitalize the American shipbuilding sector under the MASGA initiative.

Calls for Swift Implementation of Investment Plans

While South Korea has pledged a substantial $350 billion investment in the U.S., including $150 billion for the shipbuilding sector, McCormick stressed the urgency of expediting the implementation of these commitments. He emphasized the need for proactive steps to bolster capabilities in both countries, highlighting the significance of economic growth and national security. McCormick urged South Korean counterparts to accelerate investment flows, citing Japan’s prompt actions in this regard.

On a broader note, McCormick’s visit aimed to strengthen the alliance between Seoul and Washington, underscoring the criticality of the relationship for security in Asia. Despite potential disagreements, the senator emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with both South Korea and Japan. Discussions during the visit also touched on issues like fair treatment for U.S. tech companies and the evolving dynamics in the region, including the North Korean threat.

As part of his visit itinerary, McCormick engaged with key officials and business leaders in the defense and shipbuilding sectors, underscoring the significance of ongoing communication and collaboration. His interactions included meetings with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul, and visits to prominent sites like Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard in Geoje and the Demilitarized Zone.
