MDL Begins Construction of Indian Coast Guard Training Ship
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a prominent Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). On April 26, 2024, MDL commenced production activities for a new training ship specifically designed for the ICG. This initiative aims to bolster the training infrastructure for Coast Guard personnel, ensuring they are well-prepared for their duties at sea. The project represents a substantial investment in maritime training and operational readiness.
Keel Laying Ceremony Marks a Milestone
The keel laying ceremony for the training ship took place on January 13, 2025. This event was presided over by IG H K Sharma, TM, Deputy Director General (M&M) of the Indian Coast Guard. The ceremony was attended by key figures, including Mr. Biju George, Director of Shipbuilding at MDL, along with senior officials from the ICG and classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The event was held at the Nhava Yard of MDL, symbolizing a significant milestone in the ship’s construction journey.
The contract signed between MDL and the ICG is valued at Rs 310 crores. This agreement outlines the design, construction, and delivery of the training ship. The vessel will be equipped with two powerful diesel engines, enabling it to achieve speeds exceeding 20 knots. It will accommodate a total of 223 personnel, including 70 trainee officers and 46 training staff. Notably, the ship will be classified under a dual class system, ensuring adherence to the highest safety and operational standards.
Training Ship’s Role and Features
The primary purpose of the training ship is to serve as a comprehensive training platform for the Indian Coast Guard. It will be equipped with facilities to conduct basic sea training for trainee officers, providing them with essential exposure to various aspects of Coast Guard life at sea. The vessel will also feature an integral helicopter, capable of operating in ocean environments, which will enhance the training experience for the officers.
Scheduled for delivery in December 2026, this training ship will play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of Coast Guard personnel. By offering hands-on training and real-world experience, the ship will help develop the skills necessary for effective maritime operations. The keel laying ceremony signifies not just a construction milestone but also a commitment to strengthening the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard. As MDL continues its work on this project, the future of maritime training in India looks promising.
