MDL plans shipyard worth 15,000 INR-Crore in Dugarajapatnam
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) and National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-AP (NSHIP-AP) have officially inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a cutting-edge shipyard at Dugarajapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry, with MDL committing a whopping 15,000 INR-Crore investment towards this greenfield project over the next five to seven years.
Key Details of the Proposed Shipyard
The state-of-the-art shipyard is set to have a design capacity of 1.2 million Gross Tonnes per year, showcasing its potential to construct a wide array of commercial vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, LNG carriers, and various other specialized large vessels. The MoU signed between MDL and NSHIP-AP is a crucial step towards the establishment of a robust shipbuilding and ship-repair cluster in Dugarajapatnam. According to the techno-economic feasibility report, the estimated cost of setting up the shipbuilding and ship repair yard stands at a significant 29,254 INR-Crore.
Expansion of Maritime Infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh
MDL’s involvement in the maritime infrastructure expansion in Andhra Pradesh is poised to enhance the state’s shipbuilding, ship repair, and port infrastructure capabilities in Dugarajapatnam. Additionally, the state government is gearing up to create a greenfield shipbuilding-cum-port cluster in the region. The Central government is also onboard to develop the proposed port, with an estimated expenditure of 9,513 INR-Crore. These upcoming developments are expected to foster the growth of new industrial and logistics infrastructure around Dugarajapatnam, bolstering the broader maritime manufacturing ecosystem in the state.
