Mercurius back at New Jiangzhou Shipyard for more chemical Tankers

Dutch company Mercurius Shipping has contracted Jiangxi New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding Heavy Industry for two new stainless steel chemical tankers. The vessels are expected to be delivered by June and September 2026. This order marks a significant step for the shipbuilder, which has recently restructured and previously operated as Jiangzhou Union Shipbuilding.

Details of the Newbuilds

The new tankers will each measure 135 meters in length and are part of a series that includes four ships ordered last year. While the price for these new vessels has not been disclosed, the earlier series also did not reveal pricing details. This lack of transparency is not uncommon in the shipbuilding industry, especially for new entrants like Jiangzhou, which is working to establish its reputation in the international market.

Mercurius Shipping, based in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, has a long history in the maritime industry, dating back to 1983. The company currently operates a fleet of 21 vessels, primarily consisting of inland tankers and boxships. This latest order reflects Mercurius’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its capabilities in chemical transportation.

As the demand for chemical tankers continues to grow, Mercurius Shipping’s investment in newbuilds positions the company to meet future market needs. The partnership with Jiangzhou Shipbuilding also underscores the increasing collaboration between European shipping companies and Chinese shipbuilders, which is becoming a trend in the industry.
