Metrostar Management Re-enters Container Shipping
Metrostar Management Corp, a Greek tanker company led by Theodore Angelopoulos, has made a significant move back into the container shipping industry. The firm has acquired two container vessels, the Contship Eve II and Contship Max II, from fellow Greek company Contships Management, as reported by Alphaliner. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but this marks a notable shift for Metrostar, which exited the container sector almost a decade ago.
Details on the Acquisitions
The newly acquired vessels are both 1,296 teu container ships that were originally built in 2008 at the Zhejiang Ouhua shipyard in China. They come with approximately 400 reefer plugs, making them well-equipped for transporting perishable goods. Currently, the Contship Eve II is chartered to X-Press Feeders, while the Contship Max II serves King Ocean Services based in the United States. Both vessels are actively operating in the Americas, which highlights Metrostar’s strategic intent to reestablish its presence in the container shipping market.

This recent acquisition is particularly noteworthy given that Metrostar previously exited the container shipping business in 2014, when it sold five larger vessels, each with a capacity of 3,430 teu, to Goldenport and Danaos. With this re-entry, Metrostar appears to be diversifying its operations, as it currently maintains a fleet of six tankers, all of which were built in 2024 or 2025, according to shipping database Equasis. The company’s return to container shipping could signal a new chapter in its business strategy, adapting to the evolving demands of the global shipping industry.
