Greening Steel: Pathway to Sustainability - A Collaborative Event for Decarbonizing India's Steel Sector

On 10th September 2024, the Ministry of Steel will host an event titled “Greening Steel: Pathway to Sustainability” at C.D. Deshmukh Hall, India International Centre, New Delhi. This gathering will bring together representatives from various government ministries, Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), think tanks, academia, institutions, and key players from the steel industry. One of the highlights of the event will be a panel discussion, “Leadership and Innovation: Driving the Green Steel Transition,” where experts and veterans from the steel industry will share insights into the sector’s decarbonization journey.

A significant moment during the event will be the release of a comprehensive report titled “Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan.” This report, prepared by the Ministry of Steel with input from 14 Task Forces, outlines the challenges, strategies, and future vision for decarbonizing India’s steel industry. The report covers essential aspects such as the current state of carbon emissions in the steel sector, key decarbonization levers, and emerging technologies, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the use of green hydrogen.

Steel’s embedded emissions boost shipping’s GHG

The report also provides a detailed action plan for policy frameworks and technological advancements, emphasizing the role of both government and industry stakeholders in achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By aligning with India’s nationally determined commitments (NDC), this roadmap aims to steer the steel sector toward sustainability, ensuring long-term environmental and industrial benefits for the country.
