Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to Invest US$635 Million in New Shipbuilding
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has recently entered into a contract with Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to secure an industrial development site on the artificial island of Choshu Dejima. The acquisition aims to bolster Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s shipbuilding capacity in preparation for future business growth.
Expansion Plans and Government Support
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding plans to relocate certain operations from the Enoura Plant of MHI’s Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works to the newly acquired site. Additionally, the company intends to construct a new hull block manufacturing facility to enhance its production capabilities. This move comes as the demand for shipbuilding capacity rises, driven by global seaborne transportation needs and escalating economic security concerns.
In response to these trends, the Japanese government has been actively promoting policies to ensure a steady supply of ships. Notably, hulls have been designated as specified critical products under the Economic Security Promotion Act, highlighting the strategic importance of shipbuilding in the national security framework.
Government Approval and Investment
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s project has received approval from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) for its plan to ensure the supply of specified critical products. The initiative is set to involve an estimated total investment of around 100 billion yen, with government subsidies potentially covering up to 40 billion yen.
Moving forward, MHI and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding remain committed to implementing measures that will expand shipbuilding capacity. By doing so, they aim to strengthen the competitiveness of Japan’s shipbuilding industry and uphold a reliable supply of ships in the market.
This strategic move by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding underscores the company’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the maritime industry and contributing to the long-term sustainability of Japan’s shipbuilding sector.
