Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Launches Eco-Friendly Vessel
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has announced the delivery of its innovative multi-purpose vessel, Prima Verde, on January 30, 2025. The vessel, operated by MOL Drybulk Ltd. and owned by Daishin Shipping Co., Ltd., was delivered at Onomichi Dockyard in Hyogo Prefecture. This groundbreaking vessel incorporates several environmentally friendly technologies, marking a significant step toward sustainable maritime transport.
Innovative Features for Sustainability
Prima Verde stands out as the world’s first vessel to utilize green steel materials, specifically JGreeX, supplied by JFE Steel Corporation. This material significantly reduces CO2 emissions during the steel manufacturing process. The vessel’s hull is constructed using this advanced steel, showcasing a commitment to sustainability from the ground up.
Additionally, Prima Verde is equipped with a state-of-the-art engine from Japan Engine Corporation that operates exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO). This engine boasts high combustion efficiency, resulting in lower carbon dioxide emissions during operation. The combination of green steel and a high-efficiency engine positions Prima Verde as a leader in eco-friendly maritime technology.
To further enhance its environmental performance, the vessel features two VentoFoil wind power-assisted propulsion devices from ECONOWIND B.V. These devices harness wind power to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The installation of these systems is expected to significantly lower the vessel’s environmental impact, aligning with the MOL Group’s goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, as outlined in their “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” This commitment to sustainable transport reflects the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting greener shipping practices.
