MOL Achieves Historic LNG Bunkering in Vancouver

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has marked a significant milestone by successfully completing its first LNG bunkering for an LNG-fueled car carrier in Western North America. The operation took place on March 1, 2025, in English Bay, Vancouver, with Seaspan Energy Ltd. providing the LNG through its bunkering vessel, Seaspan Garibaldi. This event not only highlights MOL’s commitment to environmentally friendly fuel but also sets a precedent for future LNG operations in the region.

First of Its Kind in Western North America

The LNG bunkering operation involved the Lake Herman, an MOL-operated LNG-fueled car carrier, which was moored in English Bay. The LNG was transferred to the vessel using a Ship-to-Ship method, marking a historic first for the Japanese shipping company in this part of the world. Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “We are proud to share in this milestone with MOL as Lake Herman is the first car carrier to be fueled by a Ship-to-Ship LNG bunkering in Western North America.” He emphasized the importance of building a long-lasting relationship with MOL.

This successful operation is a crucial step in expanding the availability of LNG as a cleaner fuel alternative in major ports. Yoshikazu Urushitani, General Manager of MOL’s Marine Fuel GX Division, noted that prior to this event, there was no LNG fuel supply base in Western North America. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with Seaspan Energy, which will enable the deployment of more environmentally friendly LNG-fueled vessels in the region. Urushitani also highlighted MOL’s ongoing commitment to conducting LNG bunkering at other ports in Western North America, further enhancing options for clean supply chains.

Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

MOL is dedicated to promoting the use of LNG as a sustainable fuel source and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” The company is actively working to expand LNG fuel supply bases globally, supporting the transition to cleaner energy alternatives in the maritime industry. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to decarbonize shipping and reduce carbon footprints across the sector.

The successful LNG bunkering in Vancouver is a testament to MOL’s proactive approach in embracing innovative solutions for environmental sustainability. As the company continues to explore new avenues for LNG deployment, it sets a benchmark for the industry and contributes to the global movement towards greener shipping practices.
