MOL Expands Fleet with Second Luxury Cruise Ship

Tokyo, Japan – March 5, 2025 – Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), under the leadership of President Takeshi Hashimoto, has announced the acquisition of a second luxury cruise ship from Seabourn, currently known as Seabourn Sojourn. This 32,000-ton vessel, designed to accommodate 458 passengers, will be rebranded and operated by MOL Cruises, Ltd. under the MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES brand by late 2026, following its current deployment.
Strategic Expansion in the Cruise Market
MOL has been actively positioning its cruise business as a key growth area, especially after the successful launch of MITSUI OCEAN FUJI, which debuted in December 2024. “We are thrilled with the positive feedback from guests regarding our offerings aboard MITSUI OCEAN FUJI,” stated Tsunemichi Mukai, President of MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES. He emphasized the ship’s spacious suites, quality dining, and engaging entertainment, all of which received commendations from passengers. This encouraging reception has fueled MOL’s confidence in expanding its fleet with these two ships, which are expected to provide unique travel experiences themed around “FUNATABI – Beautiful encounters with Japan.”
Before entering passenger service, the newly acquired vessel will undergo extensive refurbishment and be re-registered as a Japanese flagged ship. This modernization will prepare it for a variety of domestic itineraries around the Sea of Japan, appealing to travelers seeking immersive cultural experiences without the crowds typically found on larger cruise ships. The planned itineraries for MITSUI OCEAN FUJI and NIPPON MARU will remain unchanged despite this acquisition, ensuring continuity for existing cruise plans.
Key Features of the New Vessel
The Seabourn Sojourn, now set to join the MOL fleet, boasts impressive specifications. With a gross tonnage of 32,477 and dimensions of 650 feet in length and 84 feet in width, it offers 229 guest suites. The ship can accommodate up to 458 guests and features four restaurants, providing a range of dining options.
Additional details regarding the ship’s new name, refurbishment plans, and specific itineraries will be announced in the future. This strategic acquisition aligns with MOL’s commitment to enhancing Japan’s cruise offerings and connecting travelers with the country’s rich culture and natural beauty.
