MOL Launches World’s First Green Hydrogen Supply from Ship

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by supplying green hydrogen produced from offshore wind using its demonstration yacht, the “Winz Maru.” This historic event took place in the central breakwater area of Tokyo as part of the “Wind Hunter Project,” which aims to promote zero-emission energy solutions. This marks the first instance globally where a ship has generated and delivered green hydrogen for onshore use while underway.
Innovative Hydrogen Production and Supply
From fiscal years 2021 to 2023, MOL conducted a series of successful demonstration tests in Omura Bay, Sasebo City, utilizing the Winz Maru. These tests encompassed all phases of hydrogen production, storage, and usage onboard. With the onset of fiscal year 2023, MOL shifted its focus to supplying domestically produced green hydrogen from the Winz Maru to onshore facilities in Tokyo Bay, following the adoption of the “Prior Projects” in the Tokyo Bay eSG Project.
The Winz Maru is designed to facilitate the handling and transportation of hydrogen, a notoriously challenging process. It converts the produced green hydrogen into methylcyclohexane (MCH) onboard, making it easier to manage. To enhance the vessel’s capabilities, MOL has modified the MCH tanks and installed turbine generators. Additionally, safety measures have been implemented to address the rougher sea conditions in Tokyo Bay compared to those in Omura Bay.
Looking ahead, MOL plans to continue its green hydrogen production activities in Tokyo Bay, targeting the production of approximately 100 Nm3 of hydrogen (equivalent to about 200 liters of MCH) by fiscal year 2025. The company also aims to supply electricity to various facilities, including a trailer home, in the central breakwater area of Tokyo.
Future Plans and Commitment to Sustainability
MOL is actively exploring further hydrogen supply initiatives and is studying the development of a large demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter Project. The company envisions establishing a domestic hydrogen value chain and aims to construct and commercialize a large demonstration vessel by the 2030s. Furthermore, a model ship of the Wind Hunter will be showcased in the “Transportation and Mobility” zone at the upcoming 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, Japan, set to commence on April 13, 2025.
Through the Wind Hunter Project, MOL is dedicated to fostering the creation of a green hydrogen supply chain and contributing to a decarbonized society. This innovative approach not only highlights the potential of renewable energy but also positions MOL as a leader in sustainable maritime practices.
