MOL makes biodiesel delivery to capesize bulk
MOL and BHP Launch Biofuel Initiative

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has embarked on its inaugural biofuel partnership with BHP Group, marking a significant step in sustainable shipping practices. Last month, MOL successfully delivered 1,000 metric tonnes of biodiesel-blended marine fuel to its capesize bulk carrier, the Midnight Dream. This collaboration aims to reduce carbon emissions in maritime operations, with the potential to cut down approximately 750 metric tonnes of CO2.
Details of the Biofuel Delivery
In a statement released today, April 4, 2025, MOL outlined the specifics of the biofuel blend used for the Midnight Dream. The delivered fuel consists of approximately 24% biodiesel (B24) mixed with 76% very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO). This blend is part of MOL’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability within the shipping industry.

The collaboration with BHP Group represents a pivotal moment for MOL as it seeks to innovate and adopt greener technologies. By utilizing biodiesel, MOL not only aims to comply with stricter environmental regulations but also to contribute to global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The anticipated reduction of 750 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions from this single delivery underscores the potential impact of biofuels in maritime operations.
This initiative aligns with the growing trend in the shipping sector to explore alternative fuels as a means to combat climate change. As the industry faces increasing pressure to lower its carbon footprint, partnerships like that of MOL and BHP are crucial in driving the transition towards more sustainable practices.
