MOL, NYK and K Line join forces to build seafarer training
Japanese Shipowners Unite for Maritime Training Vessel
In a significant effort to bolster maritime education, Japan’s leading shipowners—Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), NYK Line, and K Line—have announced a joint initiative to donate a new large-scale training vessel to the Japan Agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers (JMETS). This initiative aims to address critical challenges faced by JMETS, including aging vessels, limited onboard training opportunities, and a shortage of qualified instructors. Addressing Urgent Challenges in Maritime Training
The donation of the training vessel is a response to pressing issues highlighted in a recent study by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). This study pointed out concerns regarding funding, the duration of training programs, and the diversity of students on existing training ships. JMETS currently operates eight maritime schools and a fleet of five large training vessels, but many of these resources are becoming outdated. Rising fuel costs have also resulted in fewer at-sea training days, exacerbating the situation.
The new training vessel is anticipated to be delivered around 2030 and is expected to play a crucial role in the long-term development of Japan’s maritime workforce. The shipowners, along with JMETS, will collaborate to define the technical specifications of the vessel and begin discussions with shipyards in the upcoming months.
