MOL orders VLCC in Dalian

MOL Orders First LNG Dual-Fuel VLCC for Idemitsu

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has partnered with Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) to construct a groundbreaking LNG dual-fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC). Set to be delivered in 2027, this vessel will be the first of its kind to be chartered by a Japanese oil company, Idemitsu Tanker. Although the financial details of the 309,000 dwt tanker order remain undisclosed, this development marks a significant step in the shipping industry’s shift toward cleaner fuels.

Pioneering Sustainable Shipping Solutions

MOL’s initiative to build this dual-fuel VLCC is part of its broader strategy to enhance the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The company currently operates a fleet of 40 LNG dual-fuel vessels, which includes six VLCCs. This latest addition aims to bolster MOL’s commitment to sustainability while meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly shipping solutions.

The market impact of an ageing VLCC fleet

In a statement, MOL expressed that entering into a long-term charter contract with Idemitsu Tanker is a pivotal move toward reducing the environmental impact associated with maritime operations. By utilizing LNG, the shipping industry can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels. This transition is critical as global regulations and market pressures increasingly favor environmentally responsible practices.

The collaboration between MOL and Idemitsu Tanker highlights a significant shift in the Japanese maritime industry, promoting cleaner energy alternatives. As shipping companies around the world strive to meet stricter environmental standards, this partnership sets a precedent for future investments in sustainable vessel technology.
