MOL Secures Approval for Innovative Subsea Cable Vessels

On December 24, 2025, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), under the leadership of President and CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, announced a significant advancement in subsea power technology. The company has received approval in principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for its specialized vessel designs aimed at jointing and burying subsea power cables. This approval marks a critical step in the development of technologies essential for enhancing electricity transmission from renewable sources, particularly offshore wind farms.

The need for robust power transmission infrastructure has grown, especially for projects like wind power generation in Hokkaido. Long-distance subsea direct current (DC) transmission is emerging as a viable solution, efficiently transporting vast amounts of electricity to major consumption centers. This initiative not only supports the development of power grids but also bolsters offshore wind energy generation. MOL is collaborating with notable partners, including Sumitomo Electric Industries, Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), to create innovative technologies, including a new type of cable-laying vessel. This project is backed by the Japanese government’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Technological Development and Industry Commitment

MOL’s role in this ambitious project involves pioneering technologies for cable jointing and burial vessels. The recent AiP from ClassNK signifies a major milestone, demonstrating that the initial designs have met regulatory and safety standards. The cable jointing vessels will facilitate the connection of multiple laid cables at sea, while cable burial vessels will be responsible for protecting these cables by burying them beneath the seabed. This process is critical to prevent damage from fishing nets and vessel anchors, and it primarily utilizes remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for effective execution.

The MOL Group recognizes offshore wind power as a pivotal segment in its “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan. By advancing the development of subsea cable vessels, the company aims to significantly contribute to renewable energy expansion and the realization of a decarbonized society. This initiative aligns with MOL’s commitment to sustainability and innovation within marine technology, reinforcing its dedication to addressing global environmental challenges.

In addition to the technological innovations, MOL Group identifies “Sustainability Issues” as a cornerstone of its strategy for sustainable growth. The initiative not only supports environmental conservation but also fosters innovation in marine technology, positioning the company as a leader in the transition to renewable energy solutions.

As the demand for sustainable energy solutions continues to rise, MOL’s advancements in subsea cable technology reflect the company’s proactive approach to addressing these challenges and contributing to a greener future.
