MOL Takes Delivery of LPG-powered Newbuilding LPG Carrier

TOKYO – Mitsi O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) recently announced the delivery of the newbuilding LPG dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) named Energia Grandeur. The vessel was ordered by MOL Energia Pte. Ltd., a group company of MOL, from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. of South Korea. The delivery ceremony took place on January 29 off Mokpo Port in South Korea. Energia Grandeur will operate under a time charter contract for CSSA Chartering and Shipping Services SA (CSSA), a subsidiary of TotalEnergies.

As part of MOL’s commitment to developing a fleet powered by clean, low-impact alternative fuels, Energia Grandeur features a new hull design that incorporates the corporate colors “BLUE” and “Turquoise.” This design symbolizes the ocean and the group’s environmental initiatives, reflecting MOL’s mission to sustain people’s lives and ensure a prosperous future from the blue oceans. The vessel’s dual-fuel capabilities allow it to run on both LPG and heavy oil, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and other pollutants compared to traditional vessels.

Environmental Commitment and Future Sustainability

In addition to transporting LPG, Energia Grandeur is equipped to carry ammonia, a clean energy source that emits no carbon dioxide during combustion. The vessel’s environmentally conscious specifications, including a shaft generator for enhanced operational efficiency, contribute to further greenhouse gas reductions. MOL has utilized a transition linked loan for the financing of Energia Grandeur, demonstrating the company’s dedication to sustainable practices.

TotalEnergies, a key partner of the MOL Group, has established a strong relationship across various maritime sectors, including marine fuel trading and charter agreements for LNG carriers. The recent charter agreement for Energia Grandeur will strengthen this partnership and support both companies’ sustainability goals.

MOL’s Environmental Strategy and Net Zero Emissions Target

The MOL Group places environmental strategy at the core of its management plan, known as “BLUE ACTION 2035.” With the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the group is actively working towards creating a decarbonized society. Through concerted efforts and initiatives outlined in the MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2, MOL aims to lead the maritime industry in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
