Strengthening Cooperation with Hokkaido for Regional Contribution through Existing and New Businesses

On August 20, NYK celebrated the grand opening of its Hokkaido branch with a special event held at the Sapporo Grand Hotel. The gathering was attended by 127 guests, including notable figures such as Tsuyoshi Mitsuhashi, deputy governor of Hokkaido, and Katsuhiro Akimoto, mayor of Sapporo. Among the attendees were NYK President Takaya Soga, managing executive officers Yutaka Ikeda, Hironobu Watanabe, and Takuji Banno, along with 56 representatives from NYK Group companies.

Deputy Governor Mitsuhashi extended his congratulations on behalf of the guests, expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration between NYK and the local government. He highlighted the commitment to the sustainable revitalization of Hokkaido, noting the positive impact of the partnership.

NYK President Soga also conveyed his appreciation, emphasizing the historical connection between Hokkaido and NYK, which dates back to 1875 when the company’s predecessor, Mitsubishi Shokai, established a shipping route to the region. Soga underscored the importance of this branch in strengthening the company’s ties with Hokkaido and contributing to the local economy.

The Hokkaido branch, which officially opened in April, marks NYK’s return to the region after closing its Sapporo branch in 2009. This new branch will enhance NYK’s services in Hokkaido, including energy transportation, logistics for power and gas sectors, and vehicle and container transport. The company aims to address logistics challenges and support sustainable growth in Hokkaido by leveraging its recent agreement with the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, focusing on green innovation and increasing demand driven by semiconductor plant and data center developments.
