MSC Expands Fleet with Three New Boxships

Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has significantly increased its fleet by acquiring three additional second hand boxships, bringing its total purchases since August 2020 to a remarkable 461 vessels. This strategic move comes as MSC aims to reduce its reliance on chartering and continues to bolster its position as the world’s largest container line, having recently surpassed the 7 million TEU mark.

Details of Recent Acquisitions

The latest additions to MSC’s fleet include the 3,651 TEU Atlantica Pioneer, acquired from Oslo-based Atlantica Shipping for over $45 million. This sale marks a significant transition for Atlantica Shipping, which no longer possesses any container vessels in its portfolio. In addition, MSC has secured the 3,799 TEU Irenes Resolve from Tsakos Shipping & Trading of Greece for $23 million, along with the Marlow-controlled 3,534 TEU Rio Kobe, purchased for $32 million.

MSC’s aggressive expansion strategy extends beyond secondhand vessels. The company has also maintained a robust presence in shipyards across Asia, with a staggering order book consisting of 123 vessels totaling over 2.1 million TEU. This combination of purchasing secondhand ships and placing new orders positions MSC firmly at the forefront of the shipping industry, demonstrating its commitment to meeting global demand and enhancing operational efficiency.

As MSC continues to grow its fleet, industry observers watch closely to see how this strategy will impact market dynamics and the competitive landscape among major shipping companies.
