MSC Orders 20 Ultra-Large Boxships at Hengli Heavy Industries

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest shipowner, has once again teamed up with Hengli Heavy Industries, a prominent Chinese shipbuilder, to place a significant order in the container ship newbuild market.

Partnership Overview and Order Details

According to a recent report from Linerlytica, MSC has allegedly placed an order with Hengli Heavy Industries for 20 ultra-large container ships, each boasting a capacity of 24,000 TEU. While specific contract details such as value, delivery dates, and propulsion system specifications remain undisclosed, this order has yet to be officially confirmed by either party.

The collaboration between MSC and Hengli Heavy Industries commenced with a strategic agreement signed in August 2024, outlining comprehensive cooperation in areas like new shipbuilding, marine engines, ship repair, and vessel retrofitting.

Implications and Market Impact

Over the past two years, MSC has steadily built up a backlog of orders at Hengli Heavy Industries. If this latest order for 20 vessels is finalized, the total number of container ships with capacities exceeding 20,000 TEU commissioned through this partnership will reach 62. These vessels, ranging from 21,000 TEU to 24,000 TEU, are anticipated to commence delivery in 2027.

The significance of this order underscores MSC’s aggressive fleet expansion strategy as the world’s largest liner operator. With an operational fleet of approximately 7.4 million TEU and an order book nearing 3 million TEU, MSC’s combined capacity surpasses 10 million TEU. The addition of the 20 ultra-large container ships would further elevate MSC’s orderbook capacity beyond 3.4 million TEU.

Market Trends and Builder Momentum

Within the broader container ship newbuild market, rumors of MSC’s latest orders coincide with a resurgence in newbuilding activity. Linerlytica estimates that the global container ship orderbook now stands at 16.2 million TEU, representing 46.5% of the existing global fleet—a ratio not seen since 2009.

Meanwhile, Hengli Heavy Industries continues to demonstrate robust order momentum, having recently announced 28 confirmed orders from international shipowners. These orders encompass a diverse range of vessels, including very large ammonia carriers, crude carriers, tankers, feeder container ships, and bulk carriers.

As the maritime industry witnesses these developments, the partnership between MSC and Hengli Heavy Industries signals a notable collaboration shaping the future of container shipping.
