MSC’s mega ship Deila arrives at Vizhinjam Port
Vizhinjam Port Conducts Trial Run for Mega Container Ships Ahead of Formal Inauguration
Vizhinjam Port has commenced a trial run to evaluate its capacity for handling large container vessels, with the arrival of MSC’s Deila, a mega container ship, marking a significant step in this process. The trial aims to assess the port’s ability to accommodate and efficiently manage such large ships before the formal inauguration. This follows the earlier docking of three other ships as part of the port’s assessment procedures.
The trial run will continue over the next two months, during which an additional ten ships are expected to dock at Vizhinjam Port. This will provide further insights into the port’s operational readiness. The first vessel in the trial phase was Maersk’s San Fernando, a significant arrival from the world’s second-largest shipping company, Denmark-based Maersk. The Deila, measuring 366 meters in length and 51 meters in width with a capacity of 13,988 TEUs, will arrive from Mauritius, making a stop in Mumbai before reaching Vizhinjam.
Additionally, MSC’s feeder ship, the MSC Adu-5, will arrive next week. The Adu-5 is 294.12 meters long and 32.2 meters wide, with a capacity of 4,738 TEUs. Each ship’s arrival will be closely monitored to evaluate the efficiency of Vizhinjam Port’s equipment, including cranes and mooring facilities, to ensure that all systems are functioning optimally for future commercial operations.
