Multi-Purpose Mission Ship 1 construction ahead of schedule
Construction of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) Multi-Purpose Mission Ship 1 (MPMS 1) is moving forward smoothly and is currently ahead of schedule. The vessel is anticipated to commence its journey back home in late January next year.
Significance of MPMS 1 for MMEA
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted that upon completion and delivery, MPMS 1 will mark a significant milestone as the largest vessel in the MMEA fleet. The acquisition of this strategic asset is set to enhance the capabilities of MMEA personnel in executing various maritime operations, including enforcement, surveillance of the country’s waters, and search and rescue (SAR) missions.
Launch and Bilateral Meeting
Saifuddin Nasution was present in Istanbul, Türkiye to witness the launch of MPMS 1 at Desan Shipyard. The event was also attended by Türkiye’s Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci, Türkiye’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir, Turkish Navy Commander Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu, and Desan Shipyard representative Cenk Ismail Kaptanoglu. Additionally, several Malaysian officials were also in attendance, including Home Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Management) Ainah Mohd Soon and MMEA Deputy Director-General (Logistics) Vice Admiral (M) Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim.
During the launch ceremony, a symbolic bottle-breaking ritual using seawater from Malaysia was conducted, symbolizing the close collaboration between the two countries before the vessel was launched into the Sea of Marmara. Saifuddin Nasution also engaged in a bilateral meeting with Ciftci to discuss mutual interests, including exploring opportunities for technology-sharing in the security and maritime sectors.
The construction of MPMS 1 signifies the strong ties between Malaysia and the Republic of Türkiye, aiming to bolster MMEA’s operational capabilities in safeguarding the security and sovereignty of the nation’s waters. This project also presents avenues for enhanced cooperation in shipbuilding, maritime industry development, and the exchange of expertise and technology between the two nations.
The cooperation between Malaysia and Türkiye underscores their shared commitment to expanding strategic partnerships that will not only be mutually advantageous but also pave the way for exploring new areas of collaboration in the future.
