Name of new Sunderland bridge to pay homage to city’s shipbuilding history

Sunderland's New Bridge Named Keel Crossing

The city of Sunderland is set to unveil its latest footbridge, aptly named the Keel Crossing, which pays homage to the region’s rich shipbuilding heritage. Spanning 260 meters, this new structure will link the former Vaux Brewery site with Sheepfolds, enhancing accessibility to key areas, including the Stadium of Light. Sunderland City Council leader, Coun Michael Mordey, expressed excitement about the bridge’s potential to transform matchdays into a vibrant spectacle of red and white.

A Tribute to Sunderland’s Maritime Legacy

The Keel Crossing is strategically located over one of the world’s most significant shipbuilding hubs from the 18th and 19th centuries. This new footbridge extends the existing Keel Line, which honors the vessels constructed along the River Wear. It also connects to the city’s sculpture trail, which recently saw the addition of three new shipyard sculptures, further celebrating Sunderland’s maritime history.

“Ballast keel” in Marine Glossary

In a community-driven initiative, Sunderland residents were invited to suggest names for the bridge, resulting in over 1,000 submissions. The final contenders included Keel Crossing, Wear Crossing, and Beacon Bridge, with the winning name reflecting both simplicity and historical significance. Coun Mordey remarked, “We received hundreds of suggestions, and I am pleased that we have settled upon a name which is not only memorable and simple but also encapsulates the rich history of this part of the city.” He emphasized that the name Keel Crossing symbolizes Sunderland’s transition from its industrial past to a modern, vibrant future.

Enhancing Accessibility and Community Spirit

The Keel Crossing is expected to significantly improve access between Sunderland’s city center, Sheepfolds, and the Stadium of Light, benefiting thousands of visitors attending football matches and events. Coun Mordey highlighted the bridge’s importance as infrastructure that supports the local Premier League club. He added, “I think I speak for every fan when I say I can’t wait to see the spectacle of the Keel Crossing being transformed into a sea of red and white shirts and scarves come matchdays. It will be a real sight to behold.”

This new bridge is part of the larger Riverside Sunderland regeneration project, which encompasses a £500 million investment in the area. This ambitious initiative includes plans for an eye hospital, a Housing & Innovation Construction Skills Academy (HICSA), Riverside Park, Culture House, and a central business district. While the exact opening date for the Keel Crossing has yet to be announced, it is anticipated to be completed later this summer, marking a significant milestone in Sunderland’s ongoing development.
