NASSCO: Construction starts on US Navy’s tenth John Lewis-class fleet oiler

General Dynamics NASSCO has initiated the construction of the future USNS Dolores Huerta (T-AO 214), a significant milestone in the US Navy’s John Lewis-class fleet oiler program. Named after labor activist Dolores Huerta, this new vessel symbolizes a commitment to honoring American civil rights leaders while advancing naval capabilities.

General Dynamics NASSCO officially commenced the construction of the USNS Dolores Huerta with a steel-cutting ceremony on January 28, 2026. The naming of the ship after Dolores Huerta highlights her profound impact as a labor activist and leader of the Chicano civil rights movement, aligning with the program’s tradition of honoring notable civil rights figures.

The John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oilers, including the USNS Dolores Huerta, are designed to provide fuel transfer capabilities to US Navy carrier strike group ships while underway. With a length of 226 meters and a full-load displacement of approximately 49,850 tonnes, these vessels offer substantial fuel and cargo capacities, aviation facilities, and a maximum speed of 37 km/h (20 knots). Additionally, General Dynamics NASSCO recently secured a contract to construct two more oilers (T-AO 215 and T-AO 216), further expanding the Navy’s fleet capabilities.
