Navantia UK Expands Workforce at Methil Yard
Navantia UK is ramping up its operations at the Methil fabrication yard in Fife, announcing plans to recruit an additional 110 staff members. This follows a significant increase in the workforce from 180 to 260 since the Spanish state-owned group acquired the yard in January 2022. The recruitment drive includes 15 new apprentices, adding to the existing cohort of 54, as the company aims to bolster its capabilities in support of the Royal Navy’s future projects.
Ambitious Growth Plans
Navantia UK has set ambitious targets for the Methil yard, with hopes of doubling the workforce to between 350 and 400 within the next two to three years. Depending on incoming projects, the headcount could potentially rise to as high as 600. The company acquired the Methil yard, along with other facilities, as part of a strategic move following the administration of Harland & Wolff.

In addition to workforce expansion, Navantia UK has invested £26.7 million in upgrading the Methil yard, contributing to a total investment of £157 million across its four UK facilities. These upgrades include new plasma cutting equipment, improved lifting systems, and enhancements to welfare and office facilities. The company emphasizes that these improvements are vital for supporting the construction of the Royal Navy’s three Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships, which will provide essential logistical support to the Carrier Strike Group.
The recent christening of the £8 million Seahorse vessel marks a significant milestone for the Methil yard. Designed for long-term use, the Seahorse will facilitate the transportation of ship blocks between Navantia UK’s facilities in Appledore and Belfast. This project aligns with the UK Government’s ambition to enhance the defense sector as a driver of economic growth and job creation across the country.
