Navy Unveils New Destroyer Named After Medal of Honor Hero

The U.S. Navy celebrated a significant milestone over the weekend with the christening of its latest guided missile destroyer at Bath Iron Works in Maine. The event drew a crowd of approximately 1,500 attendees, including Governor Janet Mills and Senator Angus King, who both addressed the audience. This new vessel honors General Louis H. Wilson Jr., a distinguished Medal of Honor recipient and former commandant of the Marine Corps.

Celebrating a Legacy of Service

The christening ceremony for the destroyer took place at the Bath Iron Works shipyard, a hub for naval shipbuilding. Governor Mills and Senator King highlighted the importance of the new destroyer, emphasizing its role in supporting the Navy’s mission. The ship is named in tribute to General Wilson, who is remembered for his bravery and leadership during his military career. His legacy continues to inspire current and future generations of service members.

Charles F. Krugh, president of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, expressed pride in the shipbuilders’ commitment to excellence. “The shipbuilders of Bath Iron Works are committed to building Navy destroyers that will perform as needed when called upon by our nation’s Sailors,” he stated. Krugh underscored the responsibility of ensuring that these vessels are constructed to the highest standards, enabling the Armed Forces to effectively protect the nation and its citizens.

In addition to the newly christened destroyer, several other military vessels are currently under construction at Bath Iron Works, reflecting the ongoing dedication to enhancing the Navy’s capabilities. This commitment not only strengthens national defense but also supports local employment and economic growth in the region.
