New Facility Boosts Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced full authorization for the Shipbuilding Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) projects at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for Fiscal Year 2025. This announcement coincided with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Waterfront Production Facility, attended by Senator Shaheen, Senator Maggie Hassan, and Representative Chris Pappas. The new facility will enhance training and production capabilities, ultimately increasing maintenance capacity at the shipyard.

Strengthening National Security and Local Economy

Senator Shaheen emphasized the importance of the new Waterfront Production Facility in maintaining the efficiency of the U.S. attack submarine fleet. “One of the real advantages we have over our adversaries is our attack submarines, and we want to make sure that those nuclear submarines are on the water as much as possible,” she stated. The facility aims to streamline operations, saving both time and money, which is crucial for national security.

Senator Maggie Hassan echoed this sentiment, calling the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard an “indispensable pillar of our national security.” She noted that the facility positions the shipyard to meet modern challenges effectively. Congressman Chris Pappas also highlighted the facility’s role in supporting the workforce at the shipyard, ensuring they have the necessary resources to fulfill their missions.

Senator Shaheen has long been a champion for New England’s shipbuilding industry. Through the FY 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, she secured full authorization for SIOP projects at Portsmouth. This initiative will expand the shipyard’s capacity to maintain the fast-attack submarine fleet. Shaheen’s advocacy has included funding and workforce development efforts, starting from FY 2019. Additionally, she worked to secure $9.5 million for a new parking structure, enhancing the quality of life for the shipyard’s workforce.
