New Greek player Carlova Maritime signs up for VLCC newbuild
Carlova Maritime Orders VLCC from Hanwha Ocean

Athens-based Carlova Maritime has made a significant move in the shipping industry by placing its first newbuilding order for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean. The new vessel is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2027. This marks a pivotal step for the company, which was established earlier this year as a successor to the historic Samos Steamship.
Transitioning Leadership and Fleet Management
Founded in 2023, Carlova Maritime is spearheaded by Anthony Inglessis, who is continuing the legacy of the Inglessis family in the maritime sector. The company has already taken over the commercial and technical management of seven vessels from Samos Steamship, which has a storied history dating back to 1911. Among these vessels are five tankers, including a VLCC, and two bulk carriers. This transition highlights Carlova’s commitment to expanding its operational capabilities while honoring its heritage.

The recent order with Hanwha Ocean signifies a notable shift in the Inglessis family’s shipbuilding preferences, moving away from their traditional reliance on Japanese shipyards. This strategic decision reflects a broader trend in the industry as companies seek to diversify their partnerships and leverage new opportunities in shipbuilding.
Carlova Maritime, the Inglessis family has established another venture, JHI Steamship, which is managed by John Inglessis. JHI Steamship currently oversees six vessels and has ambitious plans to expand its fleet to 13 ships in the coming months. The company is also preparing for several newbuildings scheduled for delivery in 2026, further solidifying the Inglessis family’s presence in the maritime industry.
