New Minesweeper Dmitry Glukhov Launched in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, April 24. /TASS/. The Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard has officially laid down a new minesweeper named Dmitry Glukhov, honoring the Hero of the Soviet Union, Captain 3rd Rank Dmitry Glukhov. This significant event marks a step forward in enhancing the Russian Navy’s mine countermeasure capabilities, as reported by a TASS correspondent.

Significance of the Dmitry Glukhov

During the keel-laying ceremony, Admiral Vladimir Vorobyov emphasized the importance of collaboration among the customer, designer, and builder in the construction of these advanced vessels. He stated that the operational deployment of these ships represents a crucial advancement in the Navy’s ability to address mine threats. Following naval tradition, a plaque commemorating the construction date and location was affixed to the keel of the Dmitry Glukhov, symbolizing the ship’s future role in maritime defense.

The Dmitry Glukhov is the sixteenth vessel of the Project 12700 Alexandrit series, which is being constructed at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard. Currently, nine ships from this project are actively serving in the Russian Navy, while seven additional vessels are at various stages of construction. This series is designed to enhance the Navy’s capabilities in mine detection and neutralization, showcasing the ongoing commitment to modernizing naval forces.

Advanced Features of Project 12700 Alexandrit

Developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, the Project 12700 Alexandrit minesweepers represent a new generation of naval vessels specifically designed to combat underwater mines. These ships are equipped with advanced technology that allows them to detect mines both in the water column and on the seabed, all while remaining outside the immediate danger zone. The Dmitry Glukhov has a displacement of 890 tons and can reach speeds of up to 16.5 knots, with a crew complement of 44 personnel.

This innovative design not only enhances the operational efficiency of the Russian Navy but also reflects the ongoing evolution of maritime defense strategies. As the construction of the Dmitry Glukhov progresses, it is expected to play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of naval operations in the region.
