New Restaurant Ship Symbolizing NYK’s ESG Management to Enter Service in 2027
Hybrid Electric Propulsion Reduces Noise and Provides High-Value Customer Experience
NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) signed a deal with Maehata Shipbuilding Corporation to build a brand-new restaurant ship. The ship is planned to be finished by 2027 and will take over from the current Lady Crystal restaurant ship. Once ready, it will be run by Cruise Club Tokyo Inc., a company under NYK Group.
The new ship will be different from regular ships because it will use batteries to power its engines. This means the ship can run on electricity, which is cleaner for the environment. While the ship will still have diesel engines like most ships, NYK is also thinking about using hydrogen fuel. This would help the ship achieve net-zero emissions, meaning it won’t add more harmful gases to the air, making it a hybrid electric ship. The goal is to make this ship both eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
To make the experience better for customers, the ship will be designed to reduce vibrations, noise, and the smell of fuel. This will create a quieter and more comfortable atmosphere for passengers.
Onboard, customers will be treated to dishes made with seasonal ingredients from Akita and Hokkaido, two regions in Japan. NYK has strong ties with these areas and hopes to use food from these regions to let passengers enjoy the tastes of Japan’s four seasons. This also supports the local communities in Akita and Hokkaido.
This new ship reflects NYK’s focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management, which means they are committed to being responsible and sustainable in their business. NYK aims to offer a high-quality dining experience while also helping the planet.
