Nokia Enhances Maher Terminals’ Operations with Private Wireless
Maher Terminals, a key player in North America’s container shipping industry, is set to transform its operations through the deployment of Nokia’s Edge platform. In partnership with Future Technologies Venture, Nokia will provide a robust private wireless network that facilitates real-time data analytics, boosting efficiency and security throughout the terminal. This initiative aligns with the terminal’s goal of optimizing operations at one of the busiest ports in the region.
Innovative Solutions for Enhanced Efficiency
Located in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, Maher Terminals spans 450 acres and is recognized as one of the largest container terminal operators globally. Handling approximately 2 million containers annually, it plays a critical role in the New York metropolitan area’s cargo flow. To improve its operations, Maher Terminals required a high-bandwidth, low-latency wireless connectivity solution that could effectively support various functions, such as yard management, crane management, and gate operations.
Nokia’s Edge platform, which includes the Nokia DAC (Digital Automation Cloud), will provide a reliable private wireless network tailored for real-time asset tracking and positioning. This enhanced connectivity aims to streamline cargo container handling while simultaneously boosting customer satisfaction. Additionally, the platform incorporates ruggedized industrial devices and advanced device management capabilities, allowing for remote configuration and firmware updates.
According to Laura Markham, CIO of Maher Terminals, the decision to partner with Nokia was driven by the need for improved wireless connectivity and enhanced cybersecurity measures. She stated that the Nokia solution will not only enhance network reliability but also support advanced cargo handling and identification technologies.
