North Star signs mega ship deal with RWE

North Star Secures Landmark Deal with RWE

North Star has announced a significant multi-million-pound agreement with RWE to enhance its offshore wind farm operations. The deal includes four hybrid-powered commissioning and service operation vessels (C/SOVs), marking a historic commitment in the offshore wind sector. This partnership not only strengthens RWE’s operational capabilities but also promises to create up to 200 jobs over the next decade.

Major Expansion in Offshore Wind Operations

The agreement consists of two long-term charter contracts and two reservation agreements for new-build vessels, representing North Star’s largest commitment to date. Previously, the company set a record in 2021 with a three-ship agreement for the Dogger Bank wind farm, where it currently operates four vessels that serve as logistics bases and accommodation for technicians.

RWE, a global leader in offshore wind, operates 19 wind farms with a total capacity of 3.3 GW and has four additional projects under construction across the UK, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, contributing another 3.1 GW. The new partnership will see the deployment of two next-generation hybrid C/SOVs, the Grampian Eagle and Grampian Kestrel, which are set to enter service in 2025. These vessels are designed to support RWE’s North Sea operations and maintenance schedules, with the Grampian Eagle dedicated to the Triton Knoll wind farm for a minimum of 12 years, while the Grampian Kestrel will service RWE’s German wind farms for at least 10 years. Both contracts include options for extensions of up to three years.

To ensure operational continuity until the new vessels are ready, North Star will utilize two interim Windward Offshore ships, showcasing a collaborative effort within the industry. Additionally, the reservation agreements for two new-build SOVs, designed by VARD, are set for delivery in 2028 and 2029, further expanding North Star’s fleet.

Commitment to Sustainability and Job Creation

This landmark agreement not only enhances North Star’s operational footprint across the UK and Europe but also sets a new standard for collaboration between vessel owners and developers. North Star CEO Gitte Gard Talmo emphasized the significance of this partnership, highlighting the mutual trust and shared ambitions that underpin the collaboration. The focus remains on delivering world-class operational performance while investing in the workforce and systems.

RWE’s COO, Thomas Michel, noted that this long-term partnership is a strategic move to secure next-generation SOVs in a competitive market, which will enable RWE to maintain high performance across its operational fleet and future projects. The new vessels will feature advanced technology, including hybrid battery systems and the capability to use low-emission fuels, reflecting a commitment to greener maritime operations.

VARD CEO Cathrine Kristiseter Marti remarked that this partnership signifies a convergence of expertise and vision, aimed at advancing the offshore wind support industry. With North Star backed by Partners Group, the collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the company’s growth trajectory, positioning it as a leading logistics provider in the offshore wind sector.

North Star, headquartered in Aberdeen, UK, employs around 1,400 personnel and conducts all ship maintenance in-house, ensuring a robust operational framework for its expanding fleet.
