Norwegian Getaway Makes Historic Docking at Great Stirrup Cay
On December 28, 2025, the Norwegian Getaway achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first ship to dock at the newly constructed multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas. This development marks a pivotal shift for the destination, which previously operated solely as a tender port. With this new facility, all Norwegian Cruise Line ships, including those from sister brands like Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises, will now have direct access to the island.
Transformative Changes at Great Stirrup Cay
The new pier at Great Stirrup Cay is a game-changer for Norwegian Cruise Line and its guests. Prior to this upgrade, passengers had to rely on tender boats to reach the island, a process that could be cumbersome, especially for larger vessels like the Norwegian Getaway, which can accommodate around 4,000 guests. The new docking facility allows for a more seamless experience, enabling guests to disembark directly onto the island upon arrival.
Norwegian Cruise Line announced the pier’s construction in April 2024, with work commencing in January 2025. The goal was to complete the project by the end of 2025, and it has now been realized. The cruise line emphasized that this enhancement not only improves guest convenience but also mitigates the risk of cancellations due to inclement weather, a common issue with tendering operations.
In a statement shared in the Freestyle Daily Newsletter, NCL celebrated this historic moment, stating, “Today marks a historic moment for Norwegian Getaway and in the history of Norwegian Cruise Line to be the first ship to dock at Great Stirrup Cay with the opening of our brand-new pier.” Passengers aboard the Norwegian Getaway were acknowledged as the first to step onto the island directly from a cruise ship, making their experience even more memorable.
Future Enhancements and Attractions
Norwegian Cruise Line has invested approximately $150 million into the expansion and enhancement of Great Stirrup Cay. The new pier is just one part of a broader initiative to improve the island’s offerings. Recent upgrades include the introduction of a tram service, a family-friendly splash pad, and the Great Life Lagoon, a massive 28,000 square-foot heated pool featuring swim-up bars and water toys for children.
New Outfitting Pier Bolsters Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy
Additionally, the cruise line has launched the Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only area with premium drinks and lounging options, and Hammock Bay, a tranquil zone equipped with over 50 hammocks for relaxation. Looking ahead, the highly anticipated Great Tides Waterpark is set to open in the summer of 2026, featuring 19 slides, a lazy river, and various play areas for children.
The new pier is essential for ensuring that guests can fully enjoy the revamped destination and all its attractions. With these significant improvements, Great Stirrup Cay is poised to become an even more popular stop for cruise travelers in the future.
