Norwegian Shipping Company Orders All-Electric Cargo Vessel for Zero-Emission Operations

Norwegian coastal operator K. Sætre Rederi has taken a significant step towards sustainable shipping by ordering a new all-electric dry cargo vessel. This initiative aims to enhance zero-emission operations along the Norwegian coast. The 70-meter vessel has been contracted with the Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes, with an expected delivery date set for March 2028. In conjunction with this order, Sætre Rederi has secured a long-term freight agreement with steel producer 7 Steel Nordic, ensuring a steady flow of cargo once the vessel enters service.

The new ship is designed to transport approximately 3,400 to 3,600 tonnes of cargo and will be equipped with a 13.3 MWh battery system. This advanced battery technology provides the vessel with an electric range exceeding 270 nautical miles, positioning it among the longest-range electric cargo ships in its class. This capability allows the vessel to navigate extensive stretches of the Norwegian coastline without producing emissions, primarily utilizing existing charging infrastructure.

Technological Advancements and Long-Term Partnerships

Åge Sætre of K. Sætre Rederi emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “This represents a major technological step for coastal shipping.” The vessel’s impressive range enables it to operate fully electric across large portions of the Norwegian coastline, marking a pivotal moment in the transition to greener shipping practices.

The new vessel will cater specifically to the transport needs of 7 Steel, facilitating the movement of steel products from Mo i Rana. This partnership supports the company’s commitment to a circular and low-emission logistics chain. K. Sætre Rederi and 7 Steel Nordic have a long-standing collaboration, with the vessel Rana Frakt having served the same trade for over 30 years. The new ship is designed with longevity in mind, expected to fulfill a similar role for decades to come.

The vessel will sail under the Norwegian flag and will be crewed according to Norwegian terms. Haugesund-based SEAM, the project’s largest supplier, will provide the electrical integration and propulsion package. The design of the vessel emphasizes efficiency, featuring an optimized hull form, advanced hydrodynamics, and smart energy management systems. These elements are intended to maximize battery endurance and minimize overall energy consumption, further enhancing the vessel’s environmental performance.
