Nova Marine Carriers Expands Presence in Amsterdam with Waterland Terminal Acquisition

Italian-Swiss dry bulk shipping company Nova Marine Carriers has strengthened its foothold in the Port of Amsterdam by acquiring the Waterland Terminal. This strategic move was executed in collaboration with Germany’s Aug. Bolten and Spain’s Ership, marking a significant milestone in the consortium’s operations. The acquisition was finalized through Nova Marine’s Dutch subsidiary, Maja Stuwadoors Groep, which reached an agreement with VCK Holding to gain full ownership of VCK Port Logistics and other related port logistics assets.

The Waterland Terminal is a unique asset in the European port landscape, being the only terminal on the continent equipped for fully covered loading and discharging. This capability allows for uninterrupted operations around the clock, regardless of weather conditions. The acquisition aligns with Nova Marine’s ongoing strategy to enhance its operational capabilities and integrate shipping with shore-side logistics more effectively.

Commitment to Operational Excellence and Vertical Integration

In a statement, Nova Marine’s Chief Executive Vincenzo Romeo emphasized that the acquisition is a crucial step in the company’s strategy of vertical integration between maritime transport and port logistics. He noted, “This transaction represents another step forward in our strategy of vertical integration between maritime transport and port logistics.” The focus remains on controlling the entire value chain while investing in assets that boast strong operational and technological credentials.

The Waterland Terminal is designed for all-weather operations, featuring three covered lolo berths and two open roro berths. It supports continuous transshipment, storage, and distribution activities. The terminal includes a dehumidified warehouse specifically for steel products, as well as storage facilities for aluminum, zinc, paper, timber, and pulp. Additionally, it has outdoor yards designated for roro cargo and containers, ensuring a comprehensive service offering for various cargo types.

The existing management team at VCK will continue to oversee daily terminal operations, ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining the high standards expected from a leading operator in the breakbulk and dry bulk segments.

Building on Previous Acquisitions in the Port

This acquisition is not the first for the Nova-Bolten-Ership consortium in the Port of Amsterdam. In February 2025, the partners successfully acquired 100% of Maja Stuwadoors Groep, which allowed them to secure control of the bulk terminal at Vlothaven. With the addition of the Waterland Terminal, both Amsterdam terminals will now operate under the Maja Stuwadoors Groep umbrella, further consolidating the consortium’s presence in the region.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, Nova Marine Carriers and its partners are poised to leverage their expanded capabilities to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency in the dry bulk sector. This acquisition not only signifies growth for the consortium but also reinforces its commitment to providing reliable and innovative logistics solutions in the competitive European market.
