NYK and Nara University of Education Collaborate on Ecological Research
NYK, in partnership with Nara University of Education, has embarked on a groundbreaking joint research project aimed at studying the migratory patterns of the wandering glider, Pantala flavescens. This initiative involves leveraging NYK-operated vessels that traverse the world’s oceans to collect essential data on P. flavescens and other insects encountered during voyages. The primary objective of this research is to uncover the migratory routes and timing of these species, shedding light on their ecological connections on a global scale.
Significance of the Research
Pantala flavescens, known for its transoceanic migrations, plays a crucial role in various ecosystems worldwide. Despite their significant impact, much remains unknown about the ecology of these insects. The collaboration between NYK and Nara University of Education marks the first instance where a corporation and an academic institution have joined forces to conduct large-scale ecological surveys using a fleet of vessels. By combining observational data from NYK’s vessels with insights from the Usubaki Project, a citizen science initiative in Japan focusing on P. flavescens migration, researchers aim to unravel the mysteries surrounding the long-distance movements of these insects.
