NYK Donates 1.5 Million Yen to Nishio City in Aichi Prefecture
The NYK Group, along with its subsidiary Asahi Unyu Kaisha, Ltd., has pledged financial support for environmental conservation efforts on Sakushima, a remote island in Mikawa Bay, Japan. The donation includes 1 million yen from NYK and 500,000 yen from Asahi Unyu Kaisha. This commitment was announced during a presentation ceremony held on February 5 at the Nishio city office. This year marks the fourth consecutive year of contributions from the NYK Group to Nishio City.
Mikawa Bay, bordered by the Chita and Atsumi peninsulas, serves as a major hub for maritime activities. Since 2023, employees from the NYK Group have engaged in volunteer initiatives aimed at planting eelgrass seedlings, which are essential for restoring the local marine ecosystem. The funds from the recent donations will primarily support research and restoration activities focused on cultivating seaweed beds and eelgrass seedlings.
Local Government’s Appreciation
During the ceremony, Nishio Mayor Ken Nakamura expressed gratitude for the NYK Group’s ongoing support. He noted the growing awareness of marine environmental conservation and praised the seaweed bed restoration projects on Sakushima. Mayor Nakamura emphasized the significance of these initiatives, which not only attract attention from local residents but also contribute to the preservation of marine resources. He stated, “We will make effective use of this donation to support future activities and sincerely appreciate your continued support and cooperation.”
