Nippon Yuka Kogyo Launches New Lubricating Oil Analysis Service for Ammonia-Fueled Engines

Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of NYK, is set to introduce an innovative lubricating oil analysis service aimed at monitoring ammonia-fueled engines. This service is designed to enhance the maritime industry’s shift toward using ammonia as a cleaner fuel source. The launch is scheduled to coincide with “Sea Japan,” the country’s largest international maritime exhibition, which begins on April 22, 2026.

Ammonia fuel is gaining recognition as a leading next-generation energy source for the maritime sector. It produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions when burned, making it a key player in efforts to decarbonize shipping. As the industry embraces ammonia-powered vessels, it becomes essential to ensure the reliability of onboard systems. Similar to traditional vessels, these new ships require meticulous monitoring to identify early signs of mechanical issues.

A proven method for achieving this is through condition monitoring via lubricating oil analysis. The condition of lubricating oil serves as a reflection of an engine’s internal state. By analyzing this oil, potential abnormalities can be detected early, helping to prevent more significant issues down the line.

Technical Expertise and Service Availability

Nippon Yuka, in collaboration with NYK, has conducted extensive verification trials to develop the necessary technical expertise for this new lubricating oil analysis service. Having validated their processes, the company is now ready to offer these specialized services not only to NYK Group companies but also to external clients.

This initiative aligns with the NYK Group’s broader goals of promoting sustainable practices and advancing the adoption of next-generation fuels like ammonia. As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, services like this lubricating oil analysis will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of ammonia-fueled vessels.

With this new service, Nippon Yuka aims to contribute significantly to the sustainable transformation of the maritime sector, ensuring that as more vessels transition to ammonia fuel, they remain reliable and efficient.
