NYK Group Launches World’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Bulk Carrier

NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., part of the NYK Group, has made a significant advancement in sustainable shipping by successfully operating the ‘Green Future,’ the world’s first oceangoing bulk carrier powered by low-carbon methanol fuel. This groundbreaking initiative, which took place during the transportation of copper concentrate for BHP Group, achieved an impressive 65% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a well-to-wake basis compared to traditional fuels. The operation marks a pivotal moment in the maritime industry’s efforts to decarbonize and reduce its environmental impact.

The low-carbon methanol fuel utilized for this voyage was produced from biomass-derived feedstock and was bunkered at Ulsan port, South Korea, in September 2025. This fuel is certified under ISCC EU standards, ensuring its sustainability and traceability. The NYK Group’s initiative not only aims to reduce scope 1 emissions but also supports BHP in lowering its scope 3 emissions. By using low-carbon methanol, the NYK Group is exploring innovative ways to minimize the overall carbon footprint associated with copper products derived from the transported copper concentrate.

Timeline of Operations and Future Commitments

The ‘Green Future’ has a well-defined operational timeline that highlights its journey towards sustainability. The vessel was delivered in May 2025 as the NYK Group’s first methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier. Following its delivery, the ship underwent low-carbon methanol bunkering at Ulsan port in September 2025. In January 2026, it loaded copper concentrate in Chile, with a scheduled discharge planned for March 2026 in China. This timeline underscores the NYK Group’s commitment to integrating low-carbon fuels into its operations and advancing the decarbonization agenda in the global shipping industry.

The NYK Group’s initiative is a collaborative effort with cargo owners to promote the use of low-carbon fuels. This commitment reflects a broader strategy to achieve a more sustainable supply chain in maritime transport. By pioneering the use of methanol as a marine fuel, NYK is setting a precedent for the industry and demonstrating the potential for alternative fuels to significantly reduce emissions. The company plans to continue its efforts in promoting low-carbon solutions, contributing to a greener future for shipping and logistics.
