NYK Group Pioneers Low-Carbon Methanol Fuel in Bulk Shipping
NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., part of the NYK Group, has made a significant breakthrough in maritime sustainability by operating the ‘Green Future,’ the world’s first oceangoing bulk carrier powered by low-carbon methanol fuel. This innovative initiative achieved an impressive 65% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a well-to-wake basis compared to traditional fuels. The vessel was utilized for transporting copper concentrate for BHP Group, marking a pivotal moment in the shipping industry’s transition to greener alternatives.
The low-carbon methanol used during this operation was sourced from biomass-derived feedstock and was bunkered at Ulsan port, South Korea, in September 2025. This fuel is certified under ISCC EU standards, ensuring its sustainability and traceability. By adopting this eco-friendly fuel, the NYK Group aims to significantly reduce scope 1 emissions while assisting BHP in lowering its scope 3 emissions. This initiative not only highlights the potential of low-carbon methanol in reducing the carbon footprint of copper products but also sets a precedent for future sustainable practices in the shipping sector.
