NYK Group Unveils NAV9000 Plus Safety Initiative

The NYK Group has announced the upcoming launch of “NAV9000 Plus,” an upgraded safety standard set to enhance the safety protocols of its fleet. Scheduled for implementation in April 2026, this initiative aims to improve vessel safety through a focused approach centered on “guidance” and “co-creation.” By integrating advanced features and a structured follow-up system, NYK Group seeks to elevate safety standards across its operations.

Enhanced Features of NAV9000 Plus

The NAV9000 Plus initiative introduces several key features designed to reinforce safety within the NYK fleet. A cornerstone of this program is the NYK Golden Rule, which establishes a set of non-negotiable safety standards to ensure that all stakeholders operate under shared values. This rule aims to create a unified approach to safety that permeates every level of the organization.

Additionally, NAV9000 Plus incorporates Evaluation Sheets that provide a visual breakdown of assessment results. This feature allows for easy identification of strengths and weaknesses, enabling departments to implement tailored follow-up actions. To further enhance support, the program includes an Ambassador System. Designated ambassadors with expertise in the NAV9000 Plus concept will be appointed within various departments, such as dry bulk, car carrier, LNG carrier, and tanker. This system ensures a robust follow-up tailored to the specific needs of each vessel type.

Moreover, the program emphasizes optimized approaches based on the ship management structure. For vessels managed by external companies, the Ambassador Program will offer optimal support and follow-up. Conversely, for NYK Group-managed vessels, additional internal engagement will be provided, ensuring comprehensive support across all operations.

Goals of NAV9000 Plus

One of the primary goals of NAV9000 Plus is to enhance safety awareness among all personnel. The NYK Group is committed to promoting incident prevention as a means to ensure safe operations and cultivate a strong safety culture. The initiative aims to instill the mindset that each individual’s safety actions are crucial to the overall safety of the organization.

Furthermore, the program seeks to strengthen safety quality by fostering continuous dialogue. Guided by the principle that “Without safety, there is no trust; without trust, there is no business,” NAV9000 Plus emphasizes ongoing communication and collaboration. By reinforcing safety measures from the perspective of vessel operators, the initiative aims to improve overall safety quality.

Established in 1998, the original NAV9000 safety standard integrates international regulations and extensive experience in accident prevention, ensuring safe operations and environmental protection regardless of the relationship between shipowners and charterers.
