NYK Orders Newbuild Service Operation Vessel for Offshore
NYK, a leading player in maritime logistics, has taken a significant step to enhance its offshore wind power services by ordering a Service Operation Vessel (SOV) from PaxOcean Group. This initiative aims to strengthen NYK’s business framework for offshore wind power in the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region. The new vessel will play a vital role in supporting the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms, serving as a base for personnel accommodation and logistics.
Details of the New Vessel and Its Role
The newly commissioned SOV is designed to accommodate up to 120 personnel and includes versatile deck space to meet the logistical needs of offshore wind farm projects. It features advanced technology, including a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) and the innovative TWIN X-STERN® design by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS. These features will provide exceptional station-keeping capabilities and improved fuel efficiency. Additionally, the vessel will be equipped with a motion-compensated gangway and crane, ensuring the safe transfer of both personnel and cargo to offshore wind turbines.
Expected to be delivered around 2029, the SOV will primarily operate in offshore wind projects in Taiwan and other areas within the Asia-Pacific region. NYK has partnered with IOVTEC Co., Ltd. and Hsin Chien Marine Co., Ltd. to facilitate the vessel’s deployment. IOVTEC is a Taiwanese offshore wind company in which NYK acquired an equity stake in March 2025. It offers comprehensive services for offshore wind projects, including marine surveys and maintenance of topside and subsea components. HCM, a ship management company with a focus on bulk carriers, has a long-standing relationship with the NYK Group and is committed to safe vessel operations.
