NYK Presents Company’s History and Business to U.S.

NYK Hosts Fellowship for North American Educators

On June 26, NYK joined forces with the Keizai Koho Center (KKC) to facilitate a unique fellowship program for social studies teachers from the U.S. and Canada. This initiative aims to deepen educators’ understanding of Japan’s socio-economic landscape. The program featured engaging presentations and an insightful tour of the historic NYK Hikawa Maru in Yokohama.

Fellowship Program Overview

Founded in 1908, the Keizai Koho Center (KKC), also known as the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs, has been a vital platform for fostering international dialogue. Each year, KKC invites middle and high school educators from North America to explore Japan’s political, economic, and educational frameworks. The 2025 program, themed “A Chaotic Global Situation: Educational Environment and Opportunities for Addressing Social Issues, Expectations for Businesses,” welcomed seven educators for an immersive nine-day experience. Participants visited various businesses and institutions, gaining a well-rounded view of contemporary Japan and its global position.

Interactive Learning Experience

During the fellowship, NYK’s public relations representative delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the company’s history and its significant role in Japan’s shipping industry. Educators engaged actively, posing questions about NYK’s decarbonization initiatives and the influence of geopolitical factors on shipping. This interaction highlighted the critical nature of shipping in everyday life, fostering a deeper appreciation for the industry among the participants.

The group also toured the NYK Hikawa Maru, a historic passenger ship that now serves as a museum in Yokohama. An experienced NYK captain guided the educators, sharing insights into the ship’s operations and equipment. This firsthand experience enriched the participants’ knowledge of maritime history and its cultural significance in Japan.

Through this fellowship, NYK aims to bolster North American educators’ understanding of Japan and its shipping sector while promoting international mutual understanding. The company remains dedicated to its societal contributions and plans to continue collaborating with educational and cultural partners in the future.
