NYK Receives Silver in PRIDE Index for LGBTQ+ Initiatives

Recognizing the value of promoting diversity in the workplace

NYK Line, one of Japan’s leading shipping companies, has earned a silver rating in the 2024 PRIDE Index for the second consecutive year. This award highlights NYK’s ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming workplace for LGBTQ+ employees.

The PRIDE Index, created by the organization work with Pride (wwP) in 2016, measures how well companies support sexual minorities in Japan. It evaluates businesses on five key areas: Policy, Representation, Inspiration, Development, and Engagement/Empowerment. Based on these criteria, companies are ranked as Gold, Silver, or Bronze.

NYK’s Key LGBTQ+ Initiatives

NYK is committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity. Here are some of the steps the company has taken:

  1. Supporting LGBTQ+ Awareness Projects:
    NYK actively participated in the Rainbow Communication Badge 2023 project, an initiative led by JobRainbow Inc. to promote understanding and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
  2. Employee Training and Awareness Programs:
    To increase awareness, NYK provides e-learning courses on LGBTQ+ issues for all employees. They also conduct special training sessions for new hires and newly appointed managers.
  3. Executive Leadership in LGBTQ+ Advocacy:
    An NYK executive officer joined the Pride1000 network, a group that encourages corporate leaders to become allies for LGBTQ+ inclusion. This network aims to spread positive messages about diversity.
  4. Participation in Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2024:
    NYK employees joined the Tokyo Rainbow Pride Parade, demonstrating their public commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

  1. Human Rights Initiatives:
    The company regularly shares information about LGBTQ+ issues through internal communication channels, such as the company intranet’s human rights column.
  2. Collaborating with Experts:
    NYK participates in the Mitsubishi Human Rights Enlightenment Committee, where experts hold sessions on LGBTQ+ and human rights topics. These sessions allow NYK to learn and implement best practices in diversity management.

The work with Pride (wwP) organization began in 2012 and became an official incorporated body in 2023. Its mission is to help businesses adopt effective diversity management practices, particularly in support of LGBTQ+ employees.
