NYK’s Methanol-Fuelled Bulk Carrier Achieves Significant Emission Reduction
Japanese shipping giant NYK has announced that its innovative methanol-fuelled bulk carrier, the *Green Future*, is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 65% compared to traditional fuel sources. This significant milestone was revealed in a statement released on the company’s website on Thursday. The vessel, operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, utilized low-carbon methanol that was bunkered in Ulsan, South Korea, in September 2025.
The *Green Future* is currently engaged in transporting copper concentrate for the mining firm BHP, with the cargo set to be discharged in China in March following its loading in Chile in January. NYK’s emission reduction estimate is based on a well-to-wake analysis, which accounts for emissions from the entire lifecycle of the fuel, from production to onboard usage. This comprehensive approach underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility in maritime operations.
First of Its Kind Operation Highlights Alternative Fuels Potential
NYK has characterized this operation as the first instance of low-carbon methanol being used on an oceangoing bulk carrier, a claim supported by its own research. The methanol fuel employed during the voyage has been certified under the ISCC EU sustainability standards, ensuring its compliance with rigorous environmental criteria. This pioneering project not only demonstrates the feasibility of alternative fuels in the shipping industry but also aligns with the broader goals of cargo owners to meet their scope 3 emissions targets.
The *Green Future*, with a capacity of 81,500 m³, was delivered in May 2025 under a charter agreement with Kambara Kisen. NYK has expressed its intention to collaborate with customers to further expand the use of lower-carbon fuels across its fleet. This initiative reflects the company’s proactive approach to addressing climate change and reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport.
As the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, NYK’s advancements in utilizing methanol as a fuel source could pave the way for more environmentally friendly operations. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is expected to inspire other players in the maritime sector to explore similar pathways toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
