Odfjell Launches Innovative Green Shipping Corridor

Odfjell has taken a significant step towards sustainable shipping by launching the first operational green corridor between Brazil and Europe. Utilizing certified sustainable biofuel, this initiative will facilitate 12 to 15 voyages annually, each spanning approximately 40 days. The corridor is designed to enhance efficiency in maritime logistics while promoting environmentally friendly practices.

Establishing Sustainable Maritime Routes

The newly established green corridor leverages a blend of B24 sustainable biofuel sourced from Rio Grande, ensuring a reliable long-term fuel supply for its operations. This initiative involves collaboration among key ports, including Antwerp-Bruges, Rotterdam, and Rio Grande, all of which are working together with Odfjell to streamline processes and improve port stays.

Odfjell’s CEO, Harald Fotland, emphasized the importance of this venture, stating, “We do this to demonstrate that certified fuel, technology, and infrastructure are already available.” By absorbing the additional costs associated with the initiative, Odfjell aims to eliminate financial barriers and shift focus to operational implementation. Although Fotland acknowledges that the corridor is still a work in progress, he remains optimistic about its potential for growth through collaboration with various stakeholders across the shipping industry.

Support from Government and Industry Leaders

The initiative has garnered positive attention from government officials, including Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Anders Bjelland Eriksen. He praised Odfjell for leading the way in demonstrating the effectiveness of cooperation between businesses and public authorities in reducing emissions.

Odfjell has established itself as a frontrunner in the decarbonization of shipping, achieving a more than 50% reduction in fleet carbon intensity since 2008, outpacing International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets. This commitment to sustainability not only positions Odfjell as a leader in the industry but also sets a benchmark for future initiatives aimed at reducing the maritime sector’s environmental impact.
