Pan Ocean Expands Fleet with New Newcastlemax Bulk Carriers

South Korea’s Pan Ocean has announced a significant expansion of its newbuilding program by exercising options for two additional Newcastlemax bulk carriers at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding. This strategic move, confirmed through a company filing, will see the shipowner invest approximately KRW 228 billion, equivalent to around $77 million per vessel. With this latest order, Pan Ocean’s commitment to the Chinese shipyard has now increased to four Newcastlemax bulk carriers, with a total investment of about $308 million.

The first two vessels from the initial order are expected to be delivered by the end of October 2030. The newly ordered ships are scheduled to follow, with delivery anticipated by the end of March 2031. This expansion aligns with Pan Ocean’s ongoing strategy to enhance its fleet and strengthen its position in the large bulk carrier segment.

Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

The newly ordered Newcastlemax bulk carriers will be designed to operate on alternative fuels, including LNG and ammonia. This commitment to sustainability reflects the industry’s shift towards greener shipping solutions. By preparing its vessels for alternative fuel options, Pan Ocean is positioning itself to meet future regulatory requirements and market demands for environmentally friendly shipping practices.

Pan Ocean’s fleet currently comprises over 80 vessels, with dry bulk shipping representing approximately 60% of its overall operations. The company’s recent activities indicate a robust growth strategy, not only in the bulk carrier sector but also in tankers. Earlier this year, Pan Ocean expanded its tanker fleet by acquiring 10 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) from SK Shipping in a deal valued at nearly $700 million. This diversification underscores Pan Ocean’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities across various maritime sectors.
