Pan Ocean Signs Three-Year VLCC Charter with Trafigura
South Korean shipowner Pan Ocean has recently made headlines by announcing a significant three-year charter agreement with global commodities trader Trafigura for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC). The specific name of the vessel involved in the deal has not been disclosed by the company.
Commencement of Operations and Deployment
According to the agreement, the VLCC is set to begin operations on December 1, 2026, kicking off an initial 36-month term that will run through December 1, 2029. There is also an option to extend the charter by up to 39 months. The vessel will be deployed in the Middle East and Asia regions, serving vital transportation routes in these areas.
Pan Ocean’s Rapid Expansion in VLCC Operations
This charter agreement comes amidst Pan Ocean’s swift expansion in the VLCC sector. Earlier this year, the company struck a deal to acquire 10 VLCCs from fellow shipowner SK Shipping for nearly $700 million. This move significantly enhances Pan Ocean’s presence in the crude oil tanker market, with the transaction expected to be finalized by April 11, 2027.
In addition to these acquisitions, Pan Ocean has also been active in the VLCC newbuilding sector. The company has placed orders for new vessels with CSSC Beihai Shipbuilding and South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean. The vessels from Beihai Shipbuilding are scheduled for delivery by September 2030, while those from Hanwha Ocean are expected to be delivered by February 2030.
Furthermore, Pan Ocean has secured 20-year charter contracts for the four new VLCCs ordered from Hanwha Ocean with SK Energy and SK Incheon Petrochem, subsidiaries of the South Korean conglomerate SK Group. The total contract value for these agreements amounts to approximately US$1.62 billion, showcasing Pan Ocean’s strategic partnerships in the industry.
In conclusion, Pan Ocean’s recent charter agreement with Trafigura underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its operations and presence in the competitive VLCC market, setting the stage for future growth and success in the maritime industry.
