Pherousa Advances Ammonia Technology for Shipping

Pherousa, formerly known as Pherousa Green Technologies, has made significant strides in marine technology by signing an exclusive license agreement with Metacon SA. This partnership focuses on ammonia cracking technology for vessels. Metacon SA, a subsidiary of Swedish Metacon AB, successfully tested a prototype of this technology in 2022. The collaboration aims to enhance the maritime industry’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

Strategic Developments and Collaborations

Metacon SA has increased its stake in Pherousa to approximately 35%. Meanwhile, Cordia AS, a Norwegian company controlled by Pherousa’s Chairman, Mr. Hans Bredrup, has raised its ownership to about 50%. These moves reflect a strong commitment to advancing ammonia-based technologies in shipping.

Pherousa has also integrated Pherousa Green Shipping AS, which focuses on constructing six hydrogen-powered cargo vessels based on Deltamarin’s Ultramax model. In 2024, Pherousa continues to work closely with two major marine classification societies. Their goal is to secure an Approval in Principle (AiP) for their ammonia-based technology, which is crucial for regulatory compliance and market acceptance.

Additionally, Metacon SA is now a full project partner in the EU-funded Safecraft technology project. This initiative involves 11 parties from six countries and provides approximately EUR 265,000 in funding over 36 months. Pherousa is also engaged in two retrofit projects, demonstrating the versatility of their core technology. This technology can be applied across various vessel types, utilizing PEM Fuel Cells, Pilot Fuel in an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), or directly in hydrogen-fueled engines. These developments position Pherousa as a key player in the transition to cleaner marine energy solutions.
