Poland Unveils Ambitious Container Port Project

Poland is set to embark on a transformative project with plans to establish a major container port at Świnoujście, part of the expansive Cape Pomerania development. This initiative aims to create the country’s second deepwater container hub, complementing the existing port in Gdańsk. The new port is designed to accommodate the largest container ships in the world, enhancing Central and Eastern Europe’s connectivity to global trade networks.

Project Details and Timeline

The Deepwater Container Terminal Świnoujście will boast an impressive annual capacity of 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Key features of the port include a 17-meter deep approach, 2,900 meters of quays, and a 70-kilometer access fairway that can accommodate vessels up to 400 meters long. Construction is slated to commence in 2027, with an anticipated completion date of 2029. This timeline follows the creation of 186 hectares of new land and the dredging of 19 million tonnes of seabed material.

Polish Navy Secures New Rescue Ship Contract

This ambitious $2.35 billion investment will also enhance the surrounding infrastructure, including new rail and road systems. The project will feature a 47-hectare logistics area, ten rail tracks each measuring 800 meters, and a dedicated two-kilometer access road to minimize traffic disruptions in the city. The Szczecin–Świnoujście Seaports Authority (ZMPSiŚ) is responsible for developing both the marine and landside infrastructure. Following this, they will seek a terminal operator through an open tender process.

Notably, a previous lease agreement with a Belgian-Qatari consortium was terminated earlier this year due to financing challenges. Jarosław Siergiej, CEO of ZMPSiŚ, emphasized the significance of this project, stating it represents “the most ambitious project in our 75-year history” and positions Poland “in the Champions League of European ports.
